How is screen printing done on a T-shirt?

We’ll walk you through the process step by step

Screen printing is a very popular printing technique for customizing T-shirts, and in this tutorial, we’ll show you how we screen print a T-shirt.

Before you begin, you’ll need a few materials. Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. A screen printing frame: This is the main tool you’ll need to screen print. The frame consists of a mesh stretched over a wooden or aluminum frame. The mesh is coated with a photosensitive emulsion that is exposed to light to create the design.
  2. A squeegee: The squeegee is used to apply the ink to the screen.
  3. Screen printing ink: The ink is what transfers the image to the T-shirt. Screen printing ink is available in a wide variety of colors and consistencies.
  4. A T-shirt: Of course, you’ll need a T-shirt to print your design on.
  5. Once you have all the materials, it’s time to get started.

The process:

  1. Create your design: First, you’ll need to create the design you want to print on the T-shirt. You can do this in a graphic design program like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, or draw it by hand on paper and then scan it. Make sure the design is in a format that can be printed with a laser printer.
  2. Print the design: Use a laser printer to print your design onto transparent paper. Make sure the print size matches that of your screen.
  3. Prepare the screen: Place the screen on a table or flat surface and cover the unprinted areas of the design with masking tape to prevent the photosensitive emulsion from seeping through them. Then, apply the photosensitive emulsion to both sides of the screen. Let it air dry for about 2 hours or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Exposure: Place your printed design in a glass frame on top of the screen. Then, expose it to a high-intensity light, such as a halogen lamp or a screen printing exposure lamp, for a few minutes. The emulsion will harden where the light hits it, creating a stencil of the printed image on the screen.
  5. Clean the screen: After exposure, remove the stencil and wash the screen with pressurized water. The water will wash away the emulsion where the light didn’t hit it, leaving a sharp image of your design on the screen.
  6. Position the T-shirt: Place the T-shirt on a table or flat surface and make sure it’s wrinkle-free. Place a sheet of paper under the fabric to prevent the ink from seeping through the T-shirt.
  7. Apply the ink: Use a squeegee to apply the ink to the screen. Make sure the screen is pressed firmly against the fabric to prevent the ink from seeping underneath the screen. Apply the ink with even strokes.

As you can see, this process involves a significant amount of setup time—there are many steps to complete during the preparation phase—but once that’s done, the actual printing is the fastest part. For this reason, it’s the best option for large orders. In the textile industry, we typically place screen-printing orders for more than 2,500 units, and we have the capacity to produce up to 25,000 screen-printed items per week.

Screen printing is not a cost- or time-efficient technique for small orders. If you need to place orders of fewer than 100 units, the standard approach is to customize or print the T-shirts using digital printing, DTF, or DPI. These techniques have a much shorter setup time, but their cost is higher; therefore, they are not usually cost-effective for large orders.

As you can see, we’ve explained a range of complementary techniques, and the choice will depend on your design and the number of T-shirts you need. Our specialists are experts in this field and spend one month training at the factory before they’re ready to serve their first customer. That’s why we’re proud to say you can count on them to advise you throughout the entire purchasing, sales, and post-sales process. What are you waiting for?
